Clinical Analysis of Acute Appendicitis in the aged Group Over 60


Abstract
This report is a clinical review of 40 cases of acute appendicitis in the aged group over 60 of age who underwent surgery in Won Kwang University hospital from Nov. 1st. 1979 to Aug. 31st. 1983.
The results are retrospective study of this cases.
1) Total ratio of acute appendicitis of aged group over 60 of age among the 450 acute appendicitis patients was 8.8%.
2) Male to female sex ratio was 1 : 1.6.
3) The mean duration of the developed symptoms was 3 days.
4) Among the 40 cases, 22 cases, were either perforated or formed periappendiceal abscesses.
5) The methods of surgery were apppendectomy with drainage (50%), simple appendectomy (45%), and intestinal resetion with end to end anastomosis (5%).
6) Chief symptom was R.L.Q. pain and main physical finding was R.L.Q. tenderness.
7) The most common level of total white blood cell counts was 10, 000~15, 000/§§(50%)
8) Tumor combined cases were two (5%).
9) The most common postoperative complication was wound infection (15%).
10) The mean duration of hospitalization was 10 days in uncomplicated cases and 2 weeks in compicated cases.
11) The mortality rate was null.
